Helmut (Hellmut) Hans-Georg Josef Uhlfelder (Stern) was born out of wedlock on September 24, 1927, in Barmen-Elberfeld (Wuppertal) as Helmut (Hellmut) Hans-Georg Josef Uhlfelder. He moved from Elberfeld to Neu-Isenburg on October 17, 1924. He was registered at the Jewish Women’s Association’s home as of October 20, 1924, where he lived under the name Hellmut Uhlfelder until May 14, 1929.
He then moved from Neu-Isenburg to Spohrstr. 3 in Kassel.
He was presumably adopted by Moritz Stern, a lawyer (Mendel Gedalje Stern), and his wife Anna, née Rosenberg, who later emigrated with him.
Hellmut Uhlfelder, or Stern, apparently had a connection to Erlangen. On the registration card, the “Nationality” field lists “Bavaria” as the state of origin rather than “German Empire” as the Reich nationality. In the German Empire, the state-level nationalities (such as Hesse, Bavaria, or Prussia) did not completely replace a uniform “Reich nationality” as the primary category of citizenship, but were unified into a uniform German Reich nationality under the Reich and Nationality Act (RuStAG) of July 22, 1913 (effective January 1, 1914), whereby state citizenship remained secondary but was retained.
He died on October 5, 2016, in St. Louis, USA.
